The Sims Medieval

Description

The Sims: Medieval is an independent offshoot from the Sims franchise. It changes the setting to medieval times and offers a more linear experience than the main series. The different campaigns have no overarching plot and just differentiate with their ultimate goal. However, the goal also changes the quest strings available; and these tell smaller, humorous stories. An example would be to save the kingdom from wild chinchillas.

For every quest the player chooses one (self-created) hero who gains experience points. Those improves the special abilities which depend on the character’s profession, e.g. a king files edicts and a mage uses spells. This also means that quests has multiple solutions, depending on the used character. While the player can create up to ten characters, during a quest line he only plays one – the others are taken care of by the AI.

In comparison to other Sims titles, complexity of the time management part is driven back: the learning of abilities is replaced by the experience system and every character has only two needs (instead of six): mood, which is improved by doing everyday activities like sleeping or social interaction, and work. This consists of two activities per day like brewing potions. The management of those needs affects the quest success. Like all games in the series, The Sims: Medieval is very indirect: the player only gives suggestions what to do by clicking on other objects or persons. Then the animations click in and watching those is a big part of the playing experience. …

Starsky & Hutch

Description

Starsky & Hutch is an arcade racing game based on the popular TV series from the 70s, released to tie in with the film. The game includes 18 missions, each based on an episode of the TV show and introduced by Antonio ‘Huggy Bear’ Fargas. There is also a free roaming mode, in which the player explores the GTA-esque environment looking for action and trouble.

Like the film, the game does not entirely play it straight. Starsky & Hutch are actually shooting a TV show, and the scoring for each mission reflects how ratings-friendly your driving is. You are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals for each mission depending on performance, and must get at least 1 gold and 2 silvers on season 1 for a second season to be commissioned, and 3 golds and 2 silvers in season 2 for there to be a third for you to play through.

The overall goal in each mission is usually to chase and destroy a criminal’s car. There is always a secondary target as well. In addition, the player will gain viewers by hitting the bad guy, pulling off elaborate jumps and skids, nearly hitting civilians, and hitting the bonus targets such as canisters which are strewn through the levels. Hitting civilians will lose viewers.

Dave Starsky is the guy behind the steering wheel and Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson shoots out of the windows of the car. On PS2 and XBox a second player can take care of the shooting, using either a light gun or a standard controller. During single player, the aiming is automatic for shooting. …

L.A. Street Racing (Overspeed: High Performance Street Racing)

Description

Matt Peacock is the best race driver in the underground of L.A. and you want to take that title away from him. But of course the best of the best does not race a newcomer so you have got to race your way up starting from place 61.

At the beginning of the game you choose one of two available cars and then you go and wait at the COOL-Market for contestants to arrive. Once someone willing to race comes by, you are given a choice of tuning parts of your opponent you can race for. Before all races you have to bet at least one item from your own to start the race and since you cannot save the game manually, losing a part means that you have got to earn it again.

Every part of your car (engine, nitro and so on) can be enhanced in several stages and once you have collected all parts of the same stage, you can do a pinkslip race in which the opponent bets his car. Losing that race will cost every single tuning part you have collected for your car. The parts you win are limited to the car you win them with so you cannot swap them between cars. If you put parts of different stages on your car, the handling will decrease so you need to decide if it is wise to get the power of the tier 3 engine if that makes the handling of the car much worse. …
