In this sequel to Archimedean Dynasty, the player once again controls Emerald “Dead-Eye” Flint, the hero from the first game. Five years after Archimedean Dynasty, the underwater metropolis Neopolis, capital city of the Atlantic Federation, is a battlefield. It is a battle between the government and a new, hard line. Admiral Cox, well known from the previous installment, has to decide – and he really has problems with this decision…

Like its predecessor, AquaNox is a hybrid of submarine simulation and shooter. The game contains more than thirty single player missions and nine different player vessels. Flint earns money by completing missions, allowing him to purchase better submarines, weapons and equipment. Outside the submarine, Flint can visit stations, talk to NPCs, and receive missions from them. Unlike the first game, the player’s view is fixed to the cockpit in this installment, and the controls resemble more those of a first-person shooter. The defensive turret system has been replaced by two cannons that can be installed on the hull. …

The vessels have different characteristics and often have to be chosen for particular missions, e.g. one that requires stealth or heavy plating to withstand attacks. Torpedoes and energy-based weapons can be used to combat the foes. The ship’s controls can be switched between the FPS mode and the Simulation mode, in which the submarine is controlled more realistically. …

By the middle of the 27th century, Aqua has been divided into the democratic Atlantic Federation, the oligarchy of the Arabic Clans Union, and the monarchist Russo-Japanese Shogunate. A mercenary named Emerald “Deadeye” Flint is hired by a man called El Topo to escort a sulfur-transporting cargo ship, and gets kidnapped by a group of Shogunate mercenaries in the process.
