Colin McRae Rally 3

Description

It’s not often a racing game really catches our attention, but the Colin McRae games have always proved exceptions to that rule. While we were gliding round the Codemasters stand (we were still fresh and keen at this point), we were taken aback by just how much this third instalment in the series stood out from the all the other racers at the show. So we promptly accosted studio head and producer of the game, Guy Wilday, and bombarded him with questions to find out more.

First off we wanted to know exactly what’s changed since CMR2. apart from the graphics (there are 14,000 polygons in each car as opposed to 800 in CMR2) which are looking little short of stunning.

“With CMR2 we enhanced the original game, which had set the agenda and defined rally sport games. It was all about bigger, better, faster. For CMR3. we’re taking the graphics and physics to a level we’ve always wanted. However, the main point about CMR3 is that we’ve been working with Colin and the Ford team for many years, and go out on the rallies with them, so we get to appreciate the excitement of the whole event. What we want to capture in CMR3 is that event experience,” claimed Guy proudly. A few quick (if cack-handed) laps round one of the eight stunningly replicated real-life courses confirmed they’re well on the way to achieving this. …

Constantine

Description

The game stars John Constantine, the main character from the movie Constantine and the comic book series, Hellblazer, as he learns that unholy animals are somehow crossing into the realm of earth without care. He is then sent by his associate, Beeman, to investigate this problem. Along his investigation he meets up with Father Hennessy, who provides support, along with the Storm Crow spell.

The game starts out as John is called in to dispel a demon from a little girl’s body in a hotel. (Just like in the movie.) After the exorcism is completed, the girl wakes from her hypnosis, feeling better. The screen then cuts to Beeman’s office, where John is being informed about the weakened line between Hell and Earth by Beeman. John then steps into a puddle in the corner of the room, utters an incantation and winds up in Hell.

John sees people being chased and attacked by demon, and then sees them coming for him. He, depending on the player’s choice, uses his gun, the first part of the Witch’s Curse set, to slay these demons. He then starts searching around Hell for the first piece of the Holy Shotgun, while seeing the horrors of Hell with his own eyes. As he searches, more souls are attacked and more demons are seen fighting against John. At a dead end, he finds the second gun for the Witch’s Curse set, but is grabbed by a bird-like demon and flown through the skies of Hell. He is dropped and then is ambushed by a hoard of demons – just in front of the holding stall of the Holy Shotgun piece. He then uses the water ampoule he was carrying and gets out of Hell. …

Cabela’s Dangerous Hunts

Description

If there’s one commonality between hunting games, is that they’re pretty far removed from their gaming betters. They should have a lot in common with tactical shooters, but are almost always poorly programed, suffer from terribly designed controls and are plagued by a dysfunctional interface. While actually looking good, Dangerous Hunts sports many aspects found in everyday shooters, including the default WASD keys for movement, left-clicking to activate the scope function and a menu interface that is clear, friendly and good-looking.

The game sports three modes of play – quick hunt and career hunt and the new feature, action zone. In action zone your avatar is ported to a remote area and you are the target of the hunt, by an assortment of wild animals. The idea is to progress from area to area, and kill all the wild beasts that are trying to eat you. You are not given much in the way of weaponry, and basically have to stalk and bring them down without them getting too much in your face.

The game does have a nice array of features including 27 big game animals to hunt, 12 locations, and plenty of weapons such as sniper rifles, shotguns, revolves, knives and hunting bows, all with their highs and lows as far as power, accuracy, weight and noise. The game has a light RPG aspect to it. While the characters you can pick have certain distinguishing attributes that pertain to stealth, targeting, or woods savvy, there are basic body types that can be customized in terms of outfitting. …
