The Sims 3

Description

The Sims 3 is, like its predecessors, a real-time simulation game where the player controls the lives of one or more people in a family including their work life and social activities. In order to do so, at the start of the game the player creates one or more characters on the character creation screen which has been even more expanded since The Sims 2. Besides more choices in terms of look, clothes, colors and such, the player also chooses five personality traits from a set of 63 sorted in four groups “Mental”, “Physical”, “Social” and “Lifestyle” as well as a lifetime-goal. The personality traits influence how the Sim reacts to each event in the game. The trait “work-a-holic” for example makes the Sim love to go to work and allows him to use a computer at home to put in additional hours.

The lifetime goal, on the other hand, is similar to wishes but requires a lot of work to get to. While granting wishes can be as simple as ordering a pizza, one lifetime goal requires the player to make his Sim a CEO of a big corporation which can’t be done over night. As a compensation, the fulfilling of a lifetime goal grants the player a very large amount of lifetime points as opposed to the normal wishes. These lifetime points are used to buy numerous forms of relief including the ability to make the Sim immune to hunger. This allows the player to focus less on fulfilling the basic needs of a Sim but more on advancing his skills and socializing with neighbors, co-workers and other people in the city. The six needs themselves are the same as before including fun, hygiene and hunger. …

San Francisco Rush The Rock – Alcatraz Edition

Description

For the N64 version of the arcade hit, Midway added all-new courses and shortcuts. All six courses can be run in reverse, mirrored, or mirrored and reversed. There’s even two hidden stunt courses! Graphically, the game sacrifices detail in favor of blindingly fast screen redraws.

The gameplay is very arcade-like: You fly through the air with the greatest of ease, and when you hit a wall your car bursts into flames. You can customize your car with different colors, racing stripes, tire rims and much more.

The Rock is a substantial upgrade to the original San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing arcade game. In addition to the three original tracks (now with additional shortcuts), it includes four new extra tracks, including the famous Alcatraz Island. Also added in this update is four new cars to drive, new music tracks and an option for mirrored tracks.

Some elements of this update would appear in the Nintendo 64 version of San Francisco Rush: Extreme Racing (which was being developed simultaneously with the arcade The Rock.) …

The Sims Medieval

Description

The Sims: Medieval is an independent offshoot from the Sims franchise. It changes the setting to medieval times and offers a more linear experience than the main series. The different campaigns have no overarching plot and just differentiate with their ultimate goal. However, the goal also changes the quest strings available; and these tell smaller, humorous stories. An example would be to save the kingdom from wild chinchillas.

For every quest the player chooses one (self-created) hero who gains experience points. Those improves the special abilities which depend on the character’s profession, e.g. a king files edicts and a mage uses spells. This also means that quests has multiple solutions, depending on the used character. While the player can create up to ten characters, during a quest line he only plays one – the others are taken care of by the AI.

In comparison to other Sims titles, complexity of the time management part is driven back: the learning of abilities is replaced by the experience system and every character has only two needs (instead of six): mood, which is improved by doing everyday activities like sleeping or social interaction, and work. This consists of two activities per day like brewing potions. The management of those needs affects the quest success. Like all games in the series, The Sims: Medieval is very indirect: the player only gives suggestions what to do by clicking on other objects or persons. Then the animations click in and watching those is a big part of the playing experience. …

Starsky & Hutch

Description

Starsky & Hutch is an arcade racing game based on the popular TV series from the 70s, released to tie in with the film. The game includes 18 missions, each based on an episode of the TV show and introduced by Antonio ‘Huggy Bear’ Fargas. There is also a free roaming mode, in which the player explores the GTA-esque environment looking for action and trouble.

Like the film, the game does not entirely play it straight. Starsky & Hutch are actually shooting a TV show, and the scoring for each mission reflects how ratings-friendly your driving is. You are awarded gold, silver or bronze medals for each mission depending on performance, and must get at least 1 gold and 2 silvers on season 1 for a second season to be commissioned, and 3 golds and 2 silvers in season 2 for there to be a third for you to play through.

The overall goal in each mission is usually to chase and destroy a criminal’s car. There is always a secondary target as well. In addition, the player will gain viewers by hitting the bad guy, pulling off elaborate jumps and skids, nearly hitting civilians, and hitting the bonus targets such as canisters which are strewn through the levels. Hitting civilians will lose viewers.

Dave Starsky is the guy behind the steering wheel and Ken ‘Hutch’ Hutchinson shoots out of the windows of the car. On PS2 and XBox a second player can take care of the shooting, using either a light gun or a standard controller. During single player, the aiming is automatic for shooting. …

Sonic Unleashed

Description

During a fight on one of Dr. Eggman’s spaceships, Sonic becomes caught in a nefarious trap! Eggman uses a device to extract the Chaos Emeralds’ power, and inverts it, sending a blast to the planet below which shatters Earth into pieces, reawakening a being called Dark Gaia. With Sonic no longer of use to him, Dr. Eggman quickly jettisons him and the now dead Chaos Emeralds into space, where he crash-lands on the Earth below.

Sonic Unleashed is a combination of two types of games: during daytime stages, Sonic is his normal self, with intense speed-based levels that are reminiscent of his original games. When night falls, Sonic transforms into a monstrous, yet powerful ‘Werehog’ with stretchy arms. In nighttime stages, he must brawl his way through 3D environments crawling with Dark Gaia’s minions.

As players defeat enemies in both types of stages, they earn experience which allows them to level both Sonic’s normal and Werehog abilities, such as speed, strength, life, combat and so on. There are also 3D hub worlds to be explored during both day and night, with different events occurring in each. Sonic can help the townsfolk with tasks for items and rewards, or purchase items from shops using the rings he’s collected throughout the stages.

Sonic’s buddy Tails also makes an appearance during stages where they fly his plane. During these stages, you must press the appropriate button sequences as they appear to shoot down any oncoming enemies. …
