Turok – Dinosaur Hunter

Description

The Earth is separated by an invisible barrier from the Lost Land, a realm in which time has no meaning, and which is inhabited by ferocious dinosaurs and aliens. For many generations, the mantle of Turok has been bestowed upon those who saw the protection of the barrier as their sacred duty. But an evil lord named Campaigner is seeking for an artifact that is capable of destroying the barrier, striving to dominate the entire universe. This artifact, known as the Chronoscepter, was broken into pieces which were then hidden away. Tal’Set, a Native American and the last Turok, must find the scattered pieces of the Chronoscepter, and stop the Campaigner from obtaining them.

Turok: Dinosaur Hunter is a first-person shooter with platforming and light puzzle-solving elements. Much of the game is set in outdoor environments, and requires the player to explore them by finding various paths, jumping, swimming, and climbing. The game’s most notable enemies are dinosaurs of various sizes, though the levels also include human and demonic enemies, as well as wildlife. The player gradually gains access to thirteen weapons (plus the Chronoscepter, assembling which is the game’s main objective); these include a knife, a bow, as well as high-tech firearms such as a rocket launcher and an atomic fusion cannon. …

Stronghold

Description

FireFly Studios’ Stronghold is a combination of a building simulation (like SimCity) and a real-time strategy game. The player can build and conquer castles, populate lands with his peasants and defend his estate from invaders.

Castle management involves food production, resource gathering, processing supplies and weapons production. Peasants must be satisfied and efficient, and these needs are done through food ration sizes, tax (or bribe) management, nice or cruel town elements (boost happiness and efficiency respectively), religion and popularity supervision. Should popularity rise above 50, more peasants will enter the castle until the capacity is filled, otherwise they will leave, and all production will eventually halt. Occasional disasters can occur, such as plague, fires, sudden apple tree rots and even attacks from wild animals and bandits. Many of these can be avoided (with apothecaries, wells, and proper defenses), while others cannot. These events can sometimes affect popularity as well. …

Stronghold Crusader

Description

Firefly Studios’ Stronghold Crusader is the standalone expansion pack to the 2001 Stronghold. In Stronghold Crusader, the player can command either Crusaders or Arabs loyal to Saladin.

The four historic campaigns, which serve as training for different gameplay aspects, follow the first three Crusades, in which the player alternates between commanding Crusader and Arabian forces. New to the game are the desert environment, which holds fertile farming land only in small oases, and Arabian troops available from the Mercenary Post, which do not require weapon production, but are either cheap and only useful in numbers, or powerful but double the price of their European counterparts. Depending on the campaign and the player-set options, the Lord unit can either have a Crusader or an Arabian skin, which also reflects on the cursor (sword or saber).

The game introduces and prominently stresses the skirmish mode, where the player can choose a map and fight against several opponents who do not only differ in appearance, but also in competence and play styles. The four dukes from the original Stronghold (The Rat, The Snake, The Pig and The Wolf) make a return, and they are joined by Saladin, The Sultan, The Caliph, and Richard The Lionheart. Three additional adversaries (Emperor Frederick I, King Phillip I and the Sheriff of Nottingham) were distributed separately in exclusive bonus discs in select stores, but are available for free download on the official website and were part of subsequent re-releases of the game, Stronghold Crusader Extreme and Stronghold Crusader HD. …

Microsoft Flight Simulator 2000

Description

Flight Simulator 2000 (version 7.0), abbreviated as FS2000, was released as a major improvement over the previous versions, and was also offered in two versions: One version for “normal” users, and one “pro” version with additional aircraft. Although many users had high expectations when this version arrived, many were disappointed when they found out that the simulator demanded high-end hardware; the minimum requirements were only a Pentium 166 MHz computer, although 400–500 MHz computer was deemed necessary to have an even framerate. However, even on a high-end system, stuttering framerate was a problem, especially when performing sharp turns in graphically dense areas. Also, the visual damage effects introduced in FS5 were disabled, and continued to be unavailable in versions after FS2000. While the visual damage effects were still in the game, Microsoft disabled them through the game’s configuration files. Users can re-enable the damage effects through modifications. FS2000 also introduced computer controlled aircraft in some airports.

This version also introduced 3D elevation, making it possible to adjust the elevation for the scenery grids, thus making most of the previous scenery obsolete (as it didn’t support this feature). A GPS was also added, enabling an even more realistic operation of the simulator. FS2000 also upgraded its dynamic scenery, with more detailed models and AI that allowed aircraft to yield to other aircraft to avoid incursions while taxiing. …
